Click here for the official home page for the 11th Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International Chess Tournament  http://www.bcmchess.co.uk/monarch2002/index.html

For full coverage of the Monarch Open Tournament, you must visit the official home page, where webmaster John Saunders has excelled himself in providing all the results and reports.  I am particularly impressed with the PGN Download, which, when opened up allows you to play through all the games using Arasan 5.4.  I'm not at all sure how this is done, but I downloaded the Arasan program a while ago and the final PGN file will provide me with many enjoyable hours playing through the games in the coming winter months.

I have been unable to spend a lot of time updating this web-page, but I am still adding further game scores bit by bit as time permits.   chessmaster

A special mention to Dennis Hemsley, who made all this possible and even found time to play a game in the Minor tournament.

Port Erin plays host to chess wizards from around the world

(As reported in the Isle of Man Examiner, Tuesday 24 September 2002.)

Some of the world's greatest chess players will be arriving in Port Erin this week to compete in the Monarch Assurance International Chess Tournament that lasts from September 28 to October 6.
This year's tournament is bigger than ever before, said organiser Dennis Hemsley.  There are 19 grand masters, 1 woman grand master, 12 international masters and 6 FIDE (Federation International d'Echec) masters from 23 countries.
It's probably the highest number of international rated players we have ever had.
The grand masters and masters will be out-witting each other in games that last up to seven hours at a time (starting at 1.30pm every day).  The main tournament takes place at the Cherry Orchard Aparthotel, with major and minor events at the Erin Arts Centre and prizes range from £150 to £2,000.
The highest ranked player is Russia's Vladimir Epishin.  "He is in the super-league," said Dennis.  Mr Epishin, along with his fellow competitors, will be staying at hotels and guest houses throughout the village.
Dennis is the organiser and was also the inspiration behind the event in the 1970s.  "When I arrived in the Island in 1970, I did not know how to play chess, I was taught by my son," he explained.
There was a big Millennium Chess Festival in 1979 and at a committee meeting with the IOM Chess Association I put up the idea we should have an international chess tournament in the Island.
"The Friends of Port St Mary put us in touch with a sponsor and it has reached great heights.
Eleven years since it first started, the tournament has grown to great heights and it is known as one of the most prestigious open chess tournaments in the world.  It's all down to a lot of hard work and the continued sponsorship of Monarch Assurance and the Department of Tourism and Leisure.
Over the past few months, Mr Hemsley has been battling to sort out visas for some of the competitors - who come from countries including Columbia, Ecuador, Cuba and Russia.  Many hours have been spent talking to the respective British Embassies.
There's no time to take a breather, he said, as the organisation of next year's tournament starts the day this year's finishes.  "I get inundated every day with e-mails - some of the players I have had to turn down, some of them are highly rated".
School children are very welcome to come and watch the grand masters in action, said Dennis.
"They must remember the utmost silence is critical".  If there are any questions, save them for outside the room where play takes place.  Dennis will be sitting just outside the playing area and will answer any queries.

Island prepares for Grandmaster invasion

(As reported in the Isle of Man Courier, Friday 20 September 2002.)

The outstanding feature of the 11th Monarch Assurance International chess tournament will be the 23 countries represented which is the highest number ever.
The tournament begins next Saturday, September 28th, and will involve players from both North and South America, Asia, the Middle East, Russia, continental Europe and, of course, from these islands.
In addition to the wide geographical spread the open tournament will be the strongest yet with a line-up of 21 grandmasters, 11 international masters, 5 FIDE masters and one woman grandmaster.  This makes a total of 38 titled players with many club participants availing of the opportunity to compete in such strong company.
GM Mikhail Ulibin who won this tournament 12 months ago will be defending his title.  He will be facing extremely stiff opposition as no less than six competitors have a higher FIDE rating than him.
Top rated player is GM Vladimir Epishin, another Russian, on 2643.  Within 100 rating points of him are no less than 13 GMs so nobody is going to have an easy tournament.
Two other previous winners are GMs Bogdan Lalic, late of Croatia, now England, and Mark Hebden also of England.  They rank 14 and 15 respectively so maybe their earlier experience will stand them in good stead.  Hebden, in particular, has always shown himself to be a fighter for the last half point and with the closeness in ratings will be a force to beware of.
Alan Ormsby from Douglas will be hoping to retain the Stephen Maggs trophy for the highest finishing Manx competitor though it is rumoured that Neville Gill will be a late entry.
The in-form Irish champion, IM Sam Collins, will again be competing as will Argentinean IM Ruben Felgaer who headed a strong tournament in Spain recently.
The Open competition will be held over nine rounds with the Major and Minor contests covering seven and five days respectively, the latter two taking place in the Erin Arts Centre.
The whole event is sponsored by Monarch Assurance Plc, Port St. Mary, with generous assistance from the Department of Tourism and Leisure.  Patrick Taylor, Managing Director of Monarch, will open the festival on Saturday the 28th September at 1.00pm with play commencing at 1.30pm.

TROMPOWSKI

This year's entrants to date are as follows (July 2002 ratings used where available). Dennis Hemsley reports: "Our biggest turnout of GMs and IMs so far - from 24 different countries."
